![]() No idea why the 1080 figure was the one picked, but it's been the published standard for a long time. Jerold, the 1080 figure is when the temp is approx 30 degrees F, when you get to about 70 degrees, the speed goes up, temp has the biggest effect on the FPS. The effects of the pressure on the bullet are not sudden just at whatever the actual FPS for the temp and other conditions, they happen in a range, so the lower the FPS the sub sonic bullet exits the muzzle within reason, the better, the less the bullet is affected by the changes that occur between sub sonic and supersonic. The higher FPS is really a good thing for most, especially the rifles with the 16" barrels. You are right, there is much more to it than what is published. The CZ Ultra Lux is along the lines of what I'm refering to, may or may not be the best rifle, but the design is right in there. Having the money, I'd start with a rifle with a good action and put a match barrel on it, one about 26" long at the most. I'm not going to get into which rifle is the best. For that reason, if I'm looking for best accuracy at sub sonic speeds, no matter which rifle I choose, I want one that shoots at a lower FPS within reason to exclude the effects of changes in the pressures on the bullets when going between sub and super sonic. The effects of speed on a bullet don't happen sharply at exactly the speed of sound. ![]() It was a read that very much made one think. I was just reading a good piece in a book on ballistics and the author was talking about sub vs super sonic in 22 LR, the cut off may be the speed of sound, but the pressure on the bullet does not change exactly at the speed of sound, it builds or drops off over a range of FPS, for that reason I would want a combo that sent my bullet out of the muzzle lower than the speed of sound in order to get the least change in flight.įor that reason I want a longer barrel that will give slightly less FPS right from the muzzle. To insure a bullet stays subsonic, I'll pick a longer barrel, The chamber, barrel and gun do pick which ammo they like the best. I think it's importnt to make sure the bullet stays sub sonic, a shorter barrel may increase the velocity some because the ammo was tested in a longer barrel and many sub sonic ammo's are right on the line between sub and super sonic.
